For those who like to spend more time getting to know a place and discovering its secrets and treasures, we have designed this 2 nights package trip to Villa de Leyva.
You will hardly find a place in Colombia that takes architectonic preservation as serious as Villa de Leyva. This small village is located in the department of Boyacá, roughly a 3 hours drive from Bogotá. Spanish colonizers founded the village in 1572 and visited it offers the sensation that you are going back in time; many houses have been preserved as national monuments.
The colonial village was established around the enormous Plaza Mayor. This cobblestone main square has a surface of 14.000m2 and borders old houses transformed into shops, restaurants, hotels and of course a church. Wander through the nearby streets and let yourself be swept off your feet by the charm of the narrow stone streets and whitewashed façades with rustic wooden doors. Breath the omnipresent rural life’s fresh air of this quaint village lost between the mountains, and find the perfect souvenir in one of the multiple handicraft shops.
After visiting the village we will go to El Infiernito (little hell), an ancient Muisca Observatory used to calculate the optimal time for harvest. Then we will go to the blue pond, a water reservoir made by farmers. The reservoir surprisingly turned the water’s color into a vivid blue, resulting in a beautiful contrast with the arid vegetation around it. Optionally, we can visit the 7m long fossil of a Koranosaurius; a predator raptor that lived 120 million years ago or Casa de Barro. A house inspired by Gaudi's modernism built with clay (we include the visit to two of the former sights).
Once you finish the guided tour on the arrival day, you will be dropped off at a boutique hotel with a cozy atmosphere (breakfast included), located three blocks away from Plaza Mayor.
On the second day, you are free to explore the village and surroundings by yourself or we can help arrange any activity of your preference (not included in price). Although Villa de Leyva is small, it has a wide offering of all kinds of trips for travelers. Activities can vary from hiking to natural parks, such as Iguaque to buggy races, horseback riding, bird watching, archaeological sites, museums and historical buildings.
On the third day, our driver will pick you up at the hotel at 11:00am. You will return to Bogotá via Ráquira, which is a picturesque village that has become famous due to its long tradition of pottery work. You will make a stop for lunch (own expense) there and have enough time to walk through the town and its many pottery and souvenir stores.
